Definition and Usage:

Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a pale blue compound; it becomes colorless when diluted. Hydrogen peroxide has a higher viscosity than water.

Hydrogen peroxide is a chemical compound with the formula H2O2. In its pure form, it is a liquid with an odor, slightly more viscous than water. Hydrogen peroxide is a simple peroxide (a compound with an oxygen-oxygen single bond). It is used as an oxidizer, bleaching agent, and disinfectant. Concentrated hydrogen peroxide, or “high test peroxide”, is a reactive oxygen species and has been used as a propellant in rockets.[4] Its chemistry is dominated by the unstable nature of the peroxide bond.

Hydrogen peroxide is unstable and slowly decomposes in the presence of a base or catalyst. Due to its instability, hydrogen peroxide is typically stored in a weakly acidic solution along with a stabilizer. Hydrogen peroxide is found in biological systems, including the human body. Enzymes that utilize or break down hydrogen peroxide are classified as peroxidases.

The boiling point of H2O2 has been extrapolated to 150.2 °C, approximately 50 °C higher than that of water. In practice, hydrogen peroxide undergoes potentially explosive thermal decomposition when heated to this temperature. It can be safely distilled at low temperatures under low pressure.

  • This industry, which uses the most hydrogen peroxide in the world, is being pressured by public opinion and legislation to discontinue the use of chlorine in bleaching processes. It is particularly effective in mechanical bleaching, on recycled and non-wood fibers, as well as other supported KRAFT bleaching chemicals.
  • Hydrogen peroxide is a preferred agent for natural cellulose and organic fibers. As a bleaching agent, it is beneficial for cotton, wool, and silk, providing high bleaching performance, low fiber damage, and minimal waste.
  • Today, aseptic packaging is used in food bleaching and preservation, microbial control, hair products, and the pharmaceutical industry.
  • In swimming pool cleaning, shock chemicals are useful for odor removal and as an emergency measure against waste spills in rivers and lagoons. In many water applications, oxidation technologies enhanced with ultraviolet radiation, ozone, or metal catalysts are beneficial when used in combination with hydrogen peroxide. This form consists of powerful hydroxyl radicals that remove taste and pungent odors from drinking water, colored dyes from textile waste, and a wide variety of organic impurities.
  • Hydrogen peroxide is a potent oxidizing agent. In stabilized hydrogen peroxide, active oxygen is released very slowly. However, the release of active oxygen is very rapid when mixed with metals, organic matter, or alkalis. Because of this property, special precautions are required for safe transportation.
